Ebonyi State Ministry of Education
Introduction
The first year of Governor Martin Elechi led administration witnessed a lot of achievements, many of which were capacity-building platforms on which the long-term, people-oriented policies of the government would thrive.
In line with expectations, within the second year of the administration (which started on 29th May, 2008), the policies began to pay off as several achievements were recorded by the Government in the Education sub-sector.
In line with her responsibility for the formulation and interpretation of educational policies, the State Ministry of Education was able to work out fifty percent of the total cost of WAEC and NECO Registration to assist students in various schools across the State.
Through this initiative, the government spent over 200 million naira by paying fifty percent (50%) of the total cost of the two examinations, while the students paid N2,750 for each of the two examinations instead of the usual N6,000 or N8,000 per examination in previous years (private schools included).
The 27 pilot boarding schools which the Governor Martin Elechi led administration constructed received perfection touch as they were completed and equipped to taste in addition to the construction of 3 technical colleges on each of the zones of the State.
Departmental Achievements
Inspectorate Department
To re-invigorate the inspectorate department of the Ministry for a more result-oriented monitoring and supervision of schools, the State government recently procured four brand new 15-seater Peugeot buses, one each, for the 3 zones and for the secretariat.
Primary Education Department
Within the year under review, 3 public primary schools, and 7 private nursery and primary schools were granted approval for establishment. This is in addition to other complementary efforts by the Department and the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) in the day-to-day monitoring of both the primary and junior secondary schools across the State.
The Department
The Department received and distributed to benefiting schools resource materials, including computer and skill training kits from the National Mathematics Centre, Abuja and the EFT respectively.
It also interviewed and admitted 210 students into the two special science schools at Ezillo and Igbeagu.
The department also coordinated the hosting by Ebonyi State of the 2009 ICT panel workshop of the Science Teacher Association (STAN) and organized some National competitions such as the NNPC Science quiz, NMC Mathematics and Science Olympiad, and Cowbell National Mathematics Competition.
Government, through this Department, sponsored 2 staff and 27 students to the Space Week Workshop by the National Space Research and Development Agency held at Obafemi Awolowo, University, lle Ife.
PRS Department
In the Policy, Research and Statistics Department of the Ministry, Government achievements can be itemized as follows:
- Equipping/furnishing of 27 pilot schools across the State for conducive teaching and learning.
- Effective conduct of the 2008 census exercise, leading to the production of Ebonyi State school statistics.
- Renovation of schools across the State.
- Effective implementation and monitoring of the Ministry’s capital projects across the State.
- Preparation of the Ministry’s 2009 capital budget, among others.
In addition to all of the above, the Ministry in conjunction with her parastatals and Boards, have perfectly translated government plans into physical benefits to teachers and students.
Teachers Welfare
As the actual implementers of government’s educational policies, the teachers were motivated to carry the implementation to the desire of the formulator hence, government decision to promote all teachers and absorb over seven hundred federal teachers in addition to prompt payment of salaries and allowances.
