Ebonyi State Government Grants Automatic Scholarship to Debaters
The Ebonyi State Executive Council has approved automatic scholarship for the fourteen debaters that led the State to victory at the just-concluded 2009 President Yar’Adua’s National Inter-Secondary School Debate Competition.
The scholarship, which includes comprehensive health-care insurance, allows the beneficiaries to study any course in any premier university of their choice anywhere in the world.
The Personal Assistant to the State Government, Higher Education, Prof. Mike Otuma, who led the State contingent to the President’s School Debate in Abuja disclosed this in Abakaliki, the State capital. Prof. Otuma said that the Government also approved four of the debaters to join the national team to the World School Debate in Qater by February 2010 as observers, apart from the two best speakers who are to be sponsored by the Federal Government to participate in the debate.
Ebonyi State had on Thursday, 19 November 2009 defeated other states to come first in the National Schools’ Debate and also clinched the position of the overall best speaker won by Okeoga Friday and second best speaker by Eze Agatha Chisom.
In a similar development, the state Government has approved scholarships for another nine students of Community Secondary School, Noyo Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area of the State for perfectly dramatizing the book entitled, “The 39 Year Road to Ebonyi State,” authored by the State Governor, Chief Martin Elechi.
The reward is in line with the State Government’s Attitudinal Change Crusade, which emphasizes reward for those who excel and punishment for offenders.
