Introduction

Azuewah Motors, your one-stop shop for minivans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), trucks and sedans.

Since its establishment, Azuewah Motors has sold over 70 cars. Most of the cars sold were to Ebonyi indigenes who reside in Ebonyi, other parts of Nigeria and overseas. We have also sold to government agencies such as the Ebonyi Mobile Health Clinic. In fact, the first-ever Toyota Tundra Truck to land in Ebonyi State was brought in by Azuewah Motors and sold to Ebonyi State Government for the use by the Mobile Health Clinic.

Aside from individual and government agencies, Azuewah Motors has also met the transportation needs of private corporations. In 2008, BUA Ports and Terminals, a subsidiary of BUA Nigeria, Ltd, purchased two Toyota Tacoma trucks from Azuewah Motors.

The fact that they came all the way from Lagos to pick up the trucks showed us that if we had good products, then people would travel from any part of Nigeria to Abakaliki to purchase our products.

We at Azuewah Motors are very proud to have the array of customers that we have had in the past and we hope to continue to be of service to them in the future.

History

Our foray into the car business came after a series of experiences we had in sending cars from the United States to our hometown, Afikpo, Ebonyi State.

The first car we sent to Afikpo was a black 1984 Mitsubishi Montero that we sent in 1992. After that, we sent a 1992 blue Nissan Pathfinder, which was eventually sold to Omezue Anthony Ekoh. This was all in 1992.

Following that, I went to Iowa City, to attend Law school. After my graduation from Law school in 1995 and call to bar, I set up a law practice in Maryland. In the course of my work as a lawyer, I met individuals who were into car export from the United States to Nigeria. After a series of meetings with these people, I decided to give the car business another shot.

In 2004, we sent a 1997 green Nissan Quest to Ebonyi, both for personal use and to test the market.

We formally established Azuewah Motors in 2007 to provide a place where Ebonyians and other southeasterners can come and buy cars without the hassle of having to travel all the way to Lagos and Cotonou to bring cars to Ebonyi. During the times that we purchased cars for personal use at Afikpo, we saw that getting the cars from Lagos to Afikpo was a big hassle.

Things such as police and customs harassment along the road, car hijacking, and possible breakdown before getting the car to the final destination were some of the things that could add to the cost of the cars and in some cases, a total loss of the cars. We heard tales from Ebonyians who experienced brutality, extortion and other kinds of violations of their rights while trying to get their property to their homes in Ebonyi.

We figured that since we had access to the U.S. market, it would make sense to use that access to provide pre-owned cars to Ebonyians at affordable prices. We believed that with the location we had in Abakaliki, all we had to do was to bring in good cars at prices that were comparable to what were found elsewhere in Nigeria.

Since the establishment of the dealership, we had sold a total of 72 cars. Some were sold to people who came to the dealership and purchased, and some had placed orders with our office for direct purchase of the car they wanted from the United States.

Our Procurement Process

Our business strategy is simply to use the contacts we have all around the United States to procure cars at affordable rates.

We have access to a database of cars that are offered for sale to buyers all across the entire United States. This includes both private sellers and auto dealerships. We have our dedicated staff that are online searching for deals for our Ebonyi customers.

When we find a good deal, we make a deposit to hold the car and then we either drive or fly to the place to check out the car and pick it up.

We usually focus on cars that have only one owner and that have maintenance records. That way, we are sure of what we are selling to our customers. Before we make a purchase, we check the history of the car to ensure that it does not have accident history. If it does, we either will not buy it or if we do, we will disclose that history to the customer and discount the price to reflect the fact that it has been in an accident.

We basically take the hassle out of getting an affordable car.

Whether you are looking for a family car to take more people than the four-door sedans or a nice sedan or sport utility or work truck, check out what we have in stock. If we don’t have what you are looking for, just place an order for it and allow us eight weeks and we will have it down home for you.

Our Trade-In Program

Very soon we will commence our trade-in program. Under this scheme, anyone who has previously purchased a car from Azuewah Motors will be able to return such car in exchange for a newer version of the same car or of another car and pay the difference in price.

We believe that under this program, we will be able to ensure that more families, especially those in the lower-income bracket, will be able to acquire family cars at affordable prices. This scheme will also enable anyone (who feels he/she has outgrown his/her car or that it no longer suits his/her status) to acquire a more befitting car without paying too much out-of-pocket.

An example of how this program will work is as follows:

In 2009, Mr. A purchased a 2003 Toyota Camry from our location say in 2009. In 2010 he decides he needs to get a 2005 Toyota Sienna. All he will have to do is return the 2003 Toyota Camry to us for valuation by our auto engineer and our sales team. If the value of the 2003 Toyota Camry at the time he returns it is one million naira, we will deduct one million naira from the price of the 2005 Toyota Sienna. This means that if the Sienna is two million naira, he or she will only pay one million naira for the 2005 Toyota Sienna.

We believe that our customers should not get stuck with a car that no longer suits their needs or that no longer complement their status. This program applies to any one who purchased his/her car from Azuewah Motors, regardless of whether it was before or after the inception of the trade-in program.

2010 Activities Update

Like most other businesses, Azuewah Motors had its share of decline in sales due to the general economic hardship prevailing in the country. For the first quarter of this year, we sold just about five cars and almost all of those were to our special order customers living outside of Ebonyi State. As the year rolled by, things began to pick up and as at last count, we had sold over 20 cars to individuals and private businesses. We are proud to say that most of the customers sold to or made purchases for are from Ebonyi State or Ebonyi indigenes residing in other parts of the country.

In addition to our primary business of selling cars to individuals and private businesses, we also had the privilege of acting as agents for the Leasing Company of Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Bank of Industry in their purchase of One hundred units of 2011 Mack Trucks. This was our first time of acting in such capacity and we are proud to inform our customers, friends and supporters that the role we played in the transaction led to a successful conclusion of the deal and saved the Leasing Company of Nigeria hundreds of millions of naira. We thank the management of the Leasing Company of Nigeria for reposing such confidence in us and we are looking forward to acting in similar capacity not just for the Leasing Company of Nigeria but for other Nigerian private and public entities.
