Customary Court of Appeal, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State

A Brief History of the Court

Ebonyi State Customary Court of Appeal is the second tier of the state judiciary. It is an appellate court established to retry cases/matters emanating from the grass-root courts (the customary courts). The Court was formally established following the appointment and swearing into office of the then Acting President, Hon. Justice C.E. Ekuma-Nkama (now President of the Court) by the first Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam. O. Egwu, on the 14th day of July, 2004.

The Customary Court of Appeal with its present composition operates and sits in two panels. There are Sixty (60) Customary Courts with three (3) members as judges scattered in all the three Senatorial Zones of the State. There are Departmental Heads who assist in the day-to-day running of the administration of the court.

Projects

The Customary Court of Appeal (CCA) embarked on the construction of six (6) Customary Court buildings, two in each senatorial zone, which are all completed. This was made possible through the timely release of fund by the State Governor, Chief Martin N. Elechi (MFR).

The CCA will soon commence the construction of seven new courts to bring to thirteen the number of courts built in each of the old thirteen (13) LGAs. His Excellency, Governor Martin Elechi, has magnanimously approved the construction of the Customary Court of Appeal (CCA) permanent head office at Ochudo City.
